Ref Shadow Requests

​Referee Shadow Request Protocol

IMD Alpine states that new Referee’s complete 1 Referee specific shadow assignment under the supervision of a U.S. Ski and Snowboard Level 3 Alpine RF or TD (minimum Level 2 RF/TD), or a FIS TD. This pertains to coaching referees not start and finish referees.

IMD Clubs will make every effort to try and accommodate Ref shadow requests. However, these requests might not always be granted.

New IMD Referees

  • must pass the written exam prior to their shadow assignment.
  • the tenure of the referee shadow assignment is from the Team Captains’ meeting
    until the protest period has passed and the paperwork is done.
  • The referee shadow must request a shadow assignment on IMD’s google doc. located at the bottom of this page.
  • The TD will be made aware that there is a “shadow request” and after looking at the
    coaches list, the TD will grant or deny the request.
  • The “mentor” referee must complete the paperwork for the race and the RA will
    submit it to IMD. Please submit the paperwork to carma@imdalpine.org.
  • The Ref Shadow Paperwork can be found on the IMD Website under resources.
  • If the Ref Shadow is not part of a staff, they may or may not receive a
    complimentary lift ticket. This will be dependent on the Race Organizer and their
    ability to get an additional lift ticket.
  • Ref Shadows must come to the race prepared to complete all of the duties of a
    Referee. They must load the lifts with the other jury members and receive a jury radio, bring their comp guide, bring paper and pencil and be prepared to spend the entire race on the hill.
  • Mentoring Referees need to “talk out loud” during the day and communicate their thought process to the Ref Shadow. It is important to teach new referees about the gate count, safety measure such as spill zones and B-net placement. In addition, they need to cover gatekeeper cards if they are being used and the Referee Report. And lastly, signing the Jury Minutes
