Alan was recovering from back surgery that took place Tuesday.
Alan was a FIS TD. He also served many years as IMD ACC chairman.
In the 1980s, Alan developed a race software package called MacRace. Many teams used it for years.
Most recently he has been participating as a member of Snowbird’s timing crew.
“We are all feeling a deep sense of loss with the passing of Alan,” said Vince Romney, a member of the Snowbird timing crew. “He was a tireless and generous supporter of ski racing, and as I worked beside him for the past decade I observed his willingness to provide housing, transportation, resources, and mentoring to dozens of athletes through what he called his “rent-a-kid” program. He was always happy to see his former “kids” succeeding in life as well as racing, and he even had one of his former rent-a-kids architect his home. His vacant seat on the primary clock at Snowbird next year will be a difficult reality for all of us to face, and personally, I will dearly miss his friendship. Thank you Alan for all you’ve done to support SBSEF, and ski-racing in general. Till we meet again…”
Alan graduated from MIT in 1969 with BS and MS degrees in electrical and electronics engineering.
He received his PhD in computer science from the University of Utah in 1972.
He went on to work at Evans and Southerland and then of Fusion-io, which was purchased by SanDisk in 2014.
The annual IMD Scholar Award was named after him to honor his decades of service.
